Diving into Chlorophyll

Diving into Chlorophyll

This superfood is known for its strong antioxidant and anticancer effects.

Chlorophyll has been thrust into the spotlight with celebrity endorsements and national media attention, but does it actually live up to the hype?  When I hear the word chlorophyll, I am immediately brought back to my elementary school days. I’m sure we all remember learning in science class that chlorophyll collects light from the sun to make energy in plants, which turns them green. This is why it comes as no big surprise that large amounts of chlorophyll are found in some of our favorite leafy vegetables – think kale, spinach and arugula.

What also comes as no surprise is that chlorophyll is beginning to pop up everywhere as the newest go-to health trend. Once celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence and Hannah Bronfman began to talk about its benefits, chlorophyll was brought into the spotlight as a top wellness movement. Because of its powerful antioxidant and detoxifying properties, it has recently gotten national press attention in the pages of Vogue and Shape, among other top publications. Packed with vitamins and minerals, chlorophyll has also been known to have other tremendous health benefits, including boosting energy levels, curbing cravings and progressing healthy digestion.

As someone who is always on the lookout for the next wellness trend, I’ve tried everything from acai to matcha to kombucha, with varying degrees of success. Although the health benefits of chlorophyll have been talked about for over 30 years, I was skeptical to try it. I had tried wheatgrass in the past, one of the best and highest sources of chlorophyll, but I could never get over the taste. However, with so much new and positive attention on chlorophyll, I decided to research more about its benefits, even reading testimonials of those who have used chlorophyll often. After spending some time reviewing this information online, I was determined to give chlorophyll a try.

My next challenge was deciding how to best get it in my diet. In order to get chlorophyll daily, I had heard about people putting drops of chlorophyll into their water or taking it as a daily supplement. I am definitely not disciplined enough to do either of those on a regular basis. After doing a bit more research, I found my way to Verday Chlorophyll Water. Verday is the first ever shelf-stable, ready-to-drink chlorophyll beverage on the market. The company has developed grab-and-go bottles, which are perfect for me. Each ready-to-drink bottle is packed with 100 milligrams of chlorophyll, which is equal to two shots of wheatgrass, 12 cups of arugula or four cups of spinach. Not only that, Verday is available in five flavors: blueberry, coconut, cucumber, lemongrass ginger and, my personal favorite, watermelon. As someone who was not able to handle the taste of wheatgrass, take it from me, each of these flavors definitely makes chlorophyll easy to drink.

Now that I’ve discovered Verday, I no longer have an excuse for not having chlorophyll on a regular basis. I keep a bottle at my desk and sip on it all day. I also use it in my smoothies and juices and, though I haven’t tried it yet, I’m told that it makes a great (and healthy!) cocktail. More importantly, since one bottle is equal to eating 12 cups of arugula, I’m never worried about getting in enough veggies for the day. In the short time that I’ve been drinking chlorophyll water, I’ve already started to feel more energized, particularly in the afternoon, which has been crucial in fighting off the “afternoon slump.”

But don’t take my word for it, check out the great infographic that WhyChlorophyll.com put together on the top five real health benefits of chlorophyll. Although it may look simple, it is a great refresher on how good chlorophyll is for you and why it makes sense to incorporate it into your daily routine. Some of the main benefits include losing weight and keeping it off, protecting skin and keeping it healthy and creating a boosted and stronger immune system.
